One-Way, Return or Hourly Coach Hire? Break-Even Formulas and Six Cost Comparisons

Compare one-way, return and hourly coach costs with a break-even formula and six scenarios: school trips, company events, weddings, airports, sightseeing and concerts. Includes district rates, tolls, stops and waiting charges.

Booking type comparison

Transfers or hourly hire? Key answers first

The key question is: Does the coach need to stay with you between journeys? If travelling A to B, with no vehicle needed during the activity, then B to A, Two one-way transfersare almost always better value. For three or more destinations, standby needs or an uncertain finish, hourly hireis usually better value and more convenient.

Using the Flying Eagle price list, urban Kowloon 45/60-seat transfers cost $700 each, or $1,400 for two. Urban hourly hire is $380 with a 4-hour minimum: at least $1,520. Two urban transfers therefore cost less; for three transfers, hourly hire within 5 hours costs less than $2,100. Below are break-even formulas, vehicle/district tables and six practical comparisons.

Transfers offer better value

  • A to B, with no coach needed during activities
  • Airport transfers and wedding banquet departures
  • Harbour crossings, with Cross-Harbour Tunnel included

Hourly hire offers better value

  • Three or more destinations in a day
  • Standby or leaving belongings on board
  • Uncertain finish time

Hire modes

How do one-way, return and hourly bookings differ?

The three charging models differ. These are the practical differences most affecting cost and experience:

Comparison One-way transfer Return: two one-way transfers hourly hire
Charging basisFixed district rate per journeySeparate outward and return faresHourly rate; minimum 4 hours in urban areas
WaitingUp to 15 minutes; longer waits charged as 1 hourUp to 15 minutes per tripStandby within the hire period

A return booking is two independent transfers, possibly with different vehicles and drivers. Take all belongings off. To leave items aboard, choose hourly hire or confirm arrangements with customer service.

Decision guide

Five questions to choose your booking type

  1. How many travel legs? For only outward and return legs, consider transfers first; for three or more, consider hourly hire.
  2. Is a coach needed during the activity? No: transfers. Standby required: hourly hire.
  3. Is the finish or return time fixed?Fixed: transfer. Uncertain: prefer hourly return hire.
  4. Must belongings remain aboard? If so, use hourly hire.
  5. How long is the total vehicle use?Use the next section's formula to compare costs.

Break-even

Break-even: how many journeys make hourly hire worthwhile?

Compare two totals:

Transfer total

One-way fare × travel legs, plus remote-location surcharges

Hourly total

Hourly rate × chargeable hours, plus tolls, parking and extra stops

Chargeable hoursmust reflect minimums: 4 hours in urban areas; 5 for The Peak, Tai Tam, Southern District, Stanley, Shek O and Repulse Bay; an extra hour for use below 6 hours at the airport, Sai Kung, Tai Po, Fanling, Sheung Shui, Tin Shui Wai, Yuen Long and Tuen Mun.

Urban Kowloon 45/60-seat example

One-way fare $700; hourly rate $380. Hourly hire costs less when $380 × hours < $700 × legs, or hours < 1.84 × legs.

  • 2 travel legs: Hourly hire would need to be under 3.7 hours to cost less, but the minimum is 4; two transfers therefore cost less.
  • 3 travel legs: Hourly hire for 5 hours or less costs less: $1,900 versus $2,100.
  • 4 travel legs: Hourly hire for 7 hours or less costs less: $2,660 versus $2,800.

Urban Kowloon 24/28-seat example

One-way fare $500; hourly rate $320. Hourly hire costs less when hours < 1.56 × legs.

  • 2 travel legs: Two transfers at $1,000 cost less.
  • 3 travel legs: For 4 hours, hourly hire costs $1,280 versus $1,500 for transfers.
  • 4 travel legs: For 6 hours or less, hourly hire costs less: $1,920 versus $2,000.

Quick reference

Vehicle and district table: when is hourly hire cheaper?

These comparisons use Kowloon departure fares and corresponding hourly rates. They are estimates excluding tolls, parking and surcharges.

Urban Kowloon to airport, 45/60 seats$1,050$450; add 1 hour below 6 hoursTransfers cost less6-hour hire costs less: $2,700 versus $3,150
  • More distant districts add an hour for use below 6 hours, so this table compares a minimum of 6 chargeable hours.
  • Tai Po and Ma On Shan have lower transfer fares; three transfers still cost less.
  • If the three legs involve different districts, use each leg's actual fare.

Scenarios

Six scenario comparisons

All examples use the Flying Eagle price list; actual charges follow the quotation.

Scenario 1: a school outing staying at one campsite all day

One 60-seat coach from a Kowloon school to Sai Kung, returning after 5 hours of activities.

BookingCalculationTotal
Two one-way transfers$950 × 2$1,900
7-hour hire$450 × 7$3,150 plus tolls and parking

Result: Two transfers save $1,250. For arrangements, see the school trip coach guide.

Scenario 2: company visit, lunch and team building

One 45-seat coach visits three urban Kowloon locations over 5 hours: office → A → B → C → office, or 4 travel legs.

BookingCalculationTotal
Four one-way transfers$700 × 4$2,800
5-hour hire$380 × 5$1,900 plus tolls and parking

Result: Hourly hire saves $900 and keeps the coach on standby. See the company outing coach guide.

Scenario 3: wedding-party transport with multiple stops

One 28-seat coach carries the wedding party for collection, ceremony, photos and restaurant, using 6 urban hours.

BookingCalculationTotal
Four one-way transfers$500 × 4; each trip allows 15 minutes of waiting$2,000
6-hour hire$320 × 6$1,920 plus tolls and parking

Result: Prices are close, but wedding schedules often overrun. With only 15 minutes allowed per transfer, hourly hire is more dependable. Guest departures can use separate transfers. See the wedding coach prices and booking guide.

Scenario 4: airport transfer

One 45-seat coach from an urban Kowloon hotel to the airport.

BookingCalculationTotal
One-way transferAirport one-way transfer$1,050
hourly hire$450 × 5: 4 hours plus 1 extra$2,250 plus tolls

Result: Choose a transfer for point-to-point airport travel. See the airport coach transfer guide.

Scenario 5: Hong Kong Island sightseeing at The Peak, Stanley and Repulse Bay

One 45-seat coach from a Kowloon hotel visits three attractions and returns: 4 legs over 6 hours.

BookingCalculationTotal
Separate transfersEach leg priced by district; attraction-to-attraction bookings are difficultNot recommended
6-hour hire$450 × 6; 5-hour minimum band$2,700 plus tolls and parking

Result: Sightseeing timings between attractions are hard to fix, making hourly hire most suitable.

Scenario 6: concert departure with uncertain finish time

One 45-seat coach travels from an urban Kowloon office and returns after the event.

BookingCalculationTotal
Two one-way transfers$700 × 2; return waiting beyond 15 minutes charged as 1 hourFrom $1,400
One-way outward + hourly return$700 + $380 × 4; surcharge after 22:00From $2,220

Result: Transfers cost less but carry more timing risk. See the event coach transfer guide.

Mixed booking

Mixed arrangements: transfers plus hourly hire

Many itineraries offer best value when different periods are priced separately:

  • Outward transfer + hourly return: Fixed outward time but uncertain finish, such as concerts, matches or dinner district drop-offs.
  • Hourly outward + return transfer: Several morning collections or visits, then a direct afternoon return from the final venue.
  • Hourly main coach + another vehicle's transfer: The main coach stays all day; another handles post-event guests only.

List every leg's times and locations so customer service can compare combinations. For multi-coach groups, see the large-group coach hire guide.

Myths

Five misconceptions about transfers and hourly hire

  1. “Hourly hire always costs more”: With three or more legs, it often costs less.
  2. “The driver can wait a little on a transfer”: Transfers allow 15 minutes; longer waits are charged as 1 hour.
  3. “A return booking means the same coach waits for me”: It is two transfers, possibly different coaches. Take belongings off.
  4. “Hourly hire charges only the hours I use”: Minimum hours apply, with an extra hour below 6 in more distant districts.
  5. “Hourly hire includes tunnels”: Tolls and parking are extra.
